Not surprisingly, a love of reading is often synonymous with a love of learning.
That's why United Way of Onslow County, in partnership with the Jacksonville Rotary Club and the Onslow County Partnership for Children, launched the Dolly Parton Imagination Library--an early childhood literacy initiative to put books in the hands of young children, helping prepare them for kindergarten.
Beginning with "The Little Engine That Could," Onslow County children receive an age-appropriate book free each month from birth to age five. Not only does it provide access to books and allow a child to have their own library by the time they enter kindergarten, but it also inspires parents to read to their children as much as possible.
How can you help? With such a large pre-K population in Onslow County we need supporters of all types to champion this cause. It only costs $2 a month per child--$24 a year, though the impact on a child's life is priceless.
